The interior of an Anderson Shelter, at the D-Day Museum, Portsmouth
Anderson Shelters were supplied by the British government to many families in the UK during the Second World War. They came in several metal pieces which were then half-buried in the ground, with earth piled over the top, to form a strong shelter. As you can see, there were bunks inside. Although the metal looks like normal corrugated iron, as might be used today on a shed roof etc., it was in fact much thicker. Anderson Shelters could withstand a lot, but were not protection against a direct hit. Many British families slept in these shelters for protection for long periods during the war.

At top left are several black boxe, which contained the standard civilian gas masks. These were supplied in plain cardboard boxes, but people often bought covers like the ones shown here, which looked nicer and were more durable. The large contraption below them is a baby’s gas mask. The whole baby – except for the ends of its legs – fitted inside. You can just see the ‘window’ through which the baby looked, and the pump on the right for pumping air through the filter. At top right is a ‘mickey mouse’ gas mask, coloured red and blue. These were designed for children aged 2-5. The bright colours were meant to make them less scary to wear!

Just a moment before this he was looking straight at me, but I had to focus.
